MOURINHO: IT CAN BE A VINTAGE LEAGUE

Jose Mourinho has consistently stated he believes six clubs are genuine title challengers this season, and nothing that happened before the transfer window closed has changed his mind.

In general, the Chelsea manager rates the other top clubs as stronger than last season. Manchester United kept together the player that won the championship and added Marouane Fellaini, a player who knows the requirements of the league and David Moyes well.

Last season's runners-up, Manchester City, have supplemented an already impressive group of players with new names who are at the peak of their careers rather than works in progress, and Liverpool can only benefit from three wins out of three so far.

'Brendan [Rodgers] did his work well with what he has at his disposal,' Mourinho says, 'and a good start is always a good start.

'A good start is always very motivational, it wakes up the people around the club and creates something buzzing around, so it is very important for them.

'Tottenham of course lost the player of the year but they bought incredibly. They spent a lot of money and despite losing a player like Gareth Bale, they have two teams.'

It was Arsenal who at the last moment made English football's big signing with the transfer of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid, a player Mourinho knows well, but he already ranked the Gunners as potential champions.

'You look at their players and Theo Walcott is not a 17-year-old boy anymore. Jack Wilshere is a starting player for England. Santi Cazorla is a European champion. We are not speaking about that young team that we played at Cardiff in a Carling Cup final.

'They are a team with top players and with the most experienced manager in the Premier League, so they were title contenders without Mesut.

'When they lost the first match against Villa, I told people that defeat means nothing because they have a good team and after that, they started winning matches and some of them very difficult ones, butMesut Ozil is a fantastic player so they are better.

'My squad is a very good squad too. I have solutions for every position with a good balance between the experienced players and the young boys with great quality to develop.

'So I think we can have a great Premier League when speaking about the contenders, but of course the other 14 teams are very important for this league and they will decide a lot of things, because it is with them that we win and we lose points, and it is with them that matches become great or not so great.'

Chelsea made an offer for Wayne Rooney this summer but no transfer materialised and by and large the leading clubs have not purchased English players. Mourinho has a suggestion why.

'It can be for different reasons but financially the situation is not simple,' he says.

'I like a young English player, and the market is closed but I asked a question to understand a little the position where he is in the market. We are speaking about a very young player and it is like he has 50 caps when he has zero caps. The price for English players is very high, the market is very difficult.'

That, Mourinho believes, is due to the financial stability of clubs in England compared with some elsewhere, including big outfits in economic difficulties who are not in a position to resist offers for their players.

'It is a healthy situation for English clubs and from that point of view it is good,' he adds.

Now the identity of his squad is fixed, it is a straight-forward case of getting the best out of the group of players and winning matches.

'I don't know if I keep them happy or not, but I am happy because I have so many good players and I will let them speak on the pitch,' Mourinho explains.

'I will judge them on the pitch. I will not judge them on words, not on interviews, not on agents or parents or friends commenting in the press or Twitter or anything like that.

'I will let football speak and I will let football decide, and if one guy is the man of the match, he has to play the next match.'

The police on Wednesday arraigned two clubs “girls’’ in a Grade 1 Area Court, Aso Pada, Mararaba, for disturbing public peace and constituting themselves into a nuisance. They are Treasure Edobor, 25, of Aso and Charity Jemo, 23, of Mararaba in Nasarawa State. The prosecutor, Insp. Friday Idache, told the court that the matter was first reported on Sept. 10, at the ‘A’ Division Police Station, Mararaba by Edobor (second accused). He said that Edobor alleged that at about 10 p.m., while she was at the City Rock Hotel, Mararaba, Jemo assaulted her without provocation. “During police investigation, we found out that both of them engaged in a free for all,’’ the prosecutor told the court. He said that the offence contravened provisions of Section 113 of the Penal Code. If convicted, the accused persons can spend a year in prison or be given an option to pay a fine. The accused persons, who were not represented by counsel, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The presiding officer, Albert Maga, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 each and a surety each in like sum. Maga ordered that the sureties must possess landed property and be resident within the jurisdiction of the court. He adjourned the case to Sept. 26, for hearing.

Presidential Villa, Abuja on Sunday said the President could not afford to continue to tell Nigerians that time was not ripe for him to declare his interest in the Presidential race.

He advised the President to declare his ambition either this month or latest by October this year. The politician said the President’s declaration latest by October was necessary to give the party a proper direction and set the agenda straight as the party, for the first time, had embarked on discussing its future.

“I will appeal to our leader, the President of this country, that at the end of September or as we enter October, we should not tell anybody that the time is not right. I think the time is right. It is good that we tell our people where we are going to; what our journey will be like,” Anenih said in reference to Jonathan’s 2015 ambition.

But the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, told one of our correspondents in Abuja on Thursday that the President was not contemplating changing his mind on his decision to declare his position on the poll only in 2014.

He said regardless of that advice, the President would rather stick to the 2014 date which he had promised Nigerians, adding that Anenih’s admonition was the PDP chief’s personal opinion.

He said, “Chief Anenih gave his own opinion. As Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, I have told Nigerians before and I am repeating it now that President Jonathan will tell them whether he will contest or not in 2014. We stick to that decision, our plan is to tell Nigerians our position in 2014, not now.”

On whether the crisis in the ruling PDP, particularly the opposition of seven state governors, was not a hurdle to the President’s ambition, the presidential aide said the crisis in the party was not more than that of any other party in the country. He said the situation was a normal occurrence in a big political party like the PDP.

Gulak then expressed the conviction that the ugly situation would soon be a thing of the past. He said, “There is no crisis in the PDP that is more than any other party in the country. Internal disagreement is a normal thing. It will always happen in a big party like the PDP. It has happened before.

“I am assuring you that the crisis will become a thing of the past very soon.”

Meanwhile, the opposition All Progressives Congress has berated the President and the PDP for repeatedly breaking the law which forbids parties from campaigning for the 2015 elections.

The party was reacting to Thursday’s inauguration of the Elders Committee of the Goodluck Jonathan Support Group in Abuja.

A former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ibrahim Mantu, had said during the event that he was convinced that 2015 was in the pocket of the PDP.

But the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, told Saturday PUNCH in Abuja on Thursday that the Jonathan administration had enthroned a culture of impunity.

He explained that the President’s supporters had carried on as if there were no laws guiding the process.

He said the Independent National Electoral Commission had warned politicians against early campaigns, adding that Section 99 (1) of the Electoral Act 2010 ( As amended) stipulates that campaigns shall commence 90 days to the election and end 24 hours to the Election Day.

Mohammed, said, “They did not start (campaigns) today. The First Lady’s peace and empowerment rally that led to the closure of Abuja was the beginning of Jonathan’s campaign.

“The ladies were wearing T-shirts bearing Jonathan’s pictures. This government has enthroned a culture of impunity.”

But his counterpart for the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, dismissed these claims.

He explained that the inauguration of the elders committee for the Goodluck Support Group had nothing to do with the 2015 election.

According to him, the group was set up to propagate the activities of the Jonathan administration. This, he said, they had done successfully over the years. The publicity secretary insisted that no law had been broken.

Metuh said, “The opposition is quick to cry foul because they don’t have anything to do. The opposition in Nigeria cannot produce any agenda. They don’t have any plan for the country.

“So all they do is to criticise and cry wolf where there is none and the opposition we have in Nigeria is the worst opposition that we ever had in democracy anywhere. They are a bunch of frustrated people.”

He argued that the inauguration of the Elders Committee of the GSG was in continuation of its efforts to strengthen its activities and further enlighten members of the public about the achievements of the Jonathan administration.

Metuh also said PDP and Jonathan had not flouted any known law of the country.

Also speaking on the issue, the national coordinator of the group, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, said the committee was not particular about 2015.

Gulak, who is also the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, argued that the organisation had been in existence since 2010 and had made positive contributions towards the unity of the country.

He said, “We are not particular about 2015. The Goodluck Support Group has been in existence since 2010 and we are sure that the group has contributed its quota to the unity of this country in enlightening Nigerians on the programmes of the administration.

“We have been working at the grassroots level, we have been working conscientiously, we have been enlightening the people about the need for peace. And the group felt that it needed a council of elders that would sit back and use their wisdom and continue to advise us.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission has, however, declined to make a pronouncement on the issue.

When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, said he was yet to get a full picture of what transpired at the event.

He told one of our correspondents, “ We need to get enough information on this issue before we make any pronouncement.”

INEC, had in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to its chairman, Kayode Idowu, on June 8, 2013 warned politicians against early campaigns citing provisions of Section 99(1) of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended).

The section stipulates that campaigns shall commence 90 days to the election and end 24 hours to the Election Day.

The statement came against the backdrop of campaign posters of leading politicians such as President Goodluck Jonathan, Congress for Progress Change (CPC) national leader, Maj.-Gen Muhammadu Buhari; Rivers State Governor, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi; and his Jigawa State counterpart, Alhaji Sule Lamido, which had surfaced in various parts of the country.

The commission warned that it would not hesitate to sanction politicians and political parties that violated the provisions of the constitution and the Electoral Act as regard early campaigns.

It also called on security agencies to arrest violators as such campaigns were a threat to democracy.

However, the Rivers State Police Command on Thursday denied blocking Governor Amaechi, from gaining access into the Government House.

The command in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Angela Agabe, described media reports on the matter as “incorrect, false, fictitious and wrong in its entirety”.

The statement reads, “The attention of the police command has been drawn to stories making the round in the media that the police blocked the road to the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt, denying His Excellency, Governor Chibuike Amaechi ,access to the Government House.

The police state categorically that they did not block the road leading to the Government House, neither did they deny Governor Rotimi Amaechi access to the Government House in Port Harcourt or elsewhere.

“The story is incorrect, false, fictitious and wrong in its entirety and it is calculated to mislead the people of Rivers State, Nigerians and the general public. The Nigeria Police Force deems it necessary to place in proper perspective the event that gave rise to the wrong information being peddled in the media.’’

EXCLUSIVE: Gov.Amaechi Invites Jang Faction To Governors’ Forum Meeting

The Rivers State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, Chibuike Amaechi, has scheduled a meeting of the forum for next week Tuesday to discuss crucial matters affecting it and the country.

PREMIUM TIMES learnt that invitation to the meeting has also been extended to Jonah Jang and the 16 governors of his faction.
A source closed to the Mr. Amaechi, who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said letters and text messages have been sent to all the 36 state governors urging them to attend.
The meeting will be the second since the forum split into two following disagreement over the May 24 election during which Mr. Amaechi was re-elected chairman after he beat his Plateau State counterpart, Jonah Jang, by 19 votes to 16.
According to the invitation to next week’s meeting obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, the forum which meets at the Rivers State Governors Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, will discuss the disagreement that trailed its May 24 election, its strategic plan for 2013 – 2015, oil theft in the country, polio eradication initiative and others.
Also, Mr Amaechi, as chairman, the draft agenda for the meeting says, will give a brief opening remarks covering fresh and subsisting litigations, update on Federation Account Allocation committee, FAAC, Excess Crude Account, ECA, and Sovereign Wealth Fund, SWF, update on State Peer Review Mechanism, SPRIM, investment conferences in the US and Russia and other issues.
It was learnt that Mr Amaechi extended the invitation to all the 16 governors in the faction of the Forum led by Mr Jang.
The governors in the Jang faction are Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta), Ibrahim Shema (Katsina), Isa Yuguda (Bauchi), Idris Wada (kogi) Theodore Orji (Abia), Sullivan Chime (Enugu), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Godswill Akapbio (Akwa Ibom), Martin Elechi (Ebonyi), Peter Obi (Anambra), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe), Garba Umar (Taraba), Saidu Dakingari (Kebbi), Ramalan Yero (Kaduna), and Olusegun Mimiko, who is the deputy chairman of the faction.
Those in the Amaechi faction are Musa Kwamkwaso (Kano), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Shettima Mustapha (Borno), Ibrahim Gaidam (Yobe), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), and Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara), who is the chairman of the faction.
Others are Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti) and Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa).
Until last August 31 when he joined other members of the PDP to form the “New” PDP, the Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed was attending the meetings called by the Jang faction.
The Amaechi faction had planned to hold its first meeting two months ago but postponed it following their invitation to a dinner organised by President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa.
Members of the faction moved from the Rivers State Governors Lodge venue of the meeting to the dinner. At the dinner, Mr Amaechi was prevented from moving close to the president to exchange greetings.

Fayemi: "Parents Depriving Kids Of Education Will Be Jailed"

Gov. Kayode Fayemi issued the threat at Emure-Ekiti in Emure Local Government Area, at the commencement of the “Registration of Pupils” into Kindergarten and Primary One class’’ for 2013/2014 academic session.
According to him, any parent who has a child of school age that is not in school from this day will be arrested and tried under the Child Rights Law 2011.

Many older people with HIV 'face age-related stigma'

Many older people with HIV say they are stigmatised because of their age, leaving them feeling isolated and afraid, a study suggests.

Researchers at Keele University say HIV is still widely seen as a disease of young people.
They say older women, in particular, fear they will be seen as "undignified" or "sexually irresponsible".
Many in the study also expressed fears over the uncertain impact of the disease as they moved into old age.
Thirty years on from the discovery of the Aids virus, the public health warnings that followed, including the "tombstone" adverts, still have a powerful resonance for those who saw them.
They helped to shape perceptions of a disease seen then as a death sentence.
Now advances in treatment mean people with HIV can have near-normal life-expectancy.
And that has had a huge impact on the types of patient needing treatment.
'Lazarus effect' Dr David Asboe, a consultant in HIV medicine at Chelsea and Westminster hospital, recalls the desperate outlook for patients he looked after 20 years ago - usually young gay men.
"We knew that once patients had an Aids diagnosis that would be uniformly fatal. The average life expectancy was approximately two years," he says.
"But in the mid-1990s we had effective treatment and suddenly it changed very quickly, there really was this Lazarus effect."
Today, half the people Dr Asboe sees are aged over 50. Some are in their mid-80s. They include gay men and heterosexual men and women. Some were infected in the UK, some overseas.
A significant proportion, he says, acquired HIV recently. He says there seems to be a myth that as people get older they might somehow be protected. That, he emphasises, is not true.
Dr Asboe, who is also chairman of the British HIV association, has been involved with the HIV and Later Life (Hall) study based at Keele University, which has looked at the social and psychological impact of the virus for people over 50.
This is a growing cohort. According to Public Health England, in 2011 more than one in five adults accessing HIV care in the UK were over 50. In 2002 it was one in nine.
Stigma The researchers used focus groups, surveys and life-history interviews with 76 older people in the London area living with the virus.
Dr Dana Rosenfeld, who led the project, says there was an "immense knowledge gap" in this field. She says it has revealed a sense of anxiety about how they may be perceived.
"A lot of the people to whom we spoke, particularly but not exclusively the women, spoke of their sense that they would be seen as undignified, that having HIV in later life would be read as sexually irresponsible.
"And there was a real sense that particularly in later life HIV status would be read in very stigmatised ways."
That was a worry for 63-year-old Adrienne Steed from Blackburn, who was diagnosed with HIV 11 years ago, infected by a long-term partner.
He had died two years previously of liver cancer. She did not know he had had HIV so when she started having symptoms it did not occur to her - or to the doctors she saw - that she could be carrying the infection.
"It was a terrible shock to me and something I remember to this day. I had no idea I was HIV-positive. It was the last thing on my mind," she says.
'Big secret' It took four years until she felt able to tell her son.
"During that time I experienced what it's like to live as an invisible woman with this big secret that you couldn't tell anybody.
"It was a horrible time. It's the stigma. You feel ashamed of yourself even though you've got nothing to be ashamed of.
"People don't realise you can contract it from a loving partner who might not even know that they have it themselves."
Now she helps others through a blog and local support group, so - as she puts it - they don't have to live with what can feel like a "dirty secret".
"Once they've spoken to me it normalises it a bit more," she says.
"They think, 'Oh she doesn't look too bad. She's nearly 64, she's active, she's still laughing. There must be some hope there.'"
The Hall study found the experience of ageing with HIV was heavily influenced by community.
Older gay men were more likely to know other people with the virus, and to know more about support organisations.
Black African heterosexual men and women had also lived with the spectre of HIV for years, but were less likely than gay men to disclose their status to others, the study said.
Many white heterosexuals, meanwhile, felt they were a "minority within a minority", and that their family and friends would be shocked by their HIV status.
Most of those who took part in the survey felt lucky to have survived into later life, but many were troubled by uncertainty over the physical impact of the virus or side-effects of treatment for this - the first generation to age with HIV.

Upcoming Nollywood actress, Amanda Ebeye, has disclosed that she can act nude for $50million.
Here’s what she said in a recent interview:
“I can do everything because I’m an actress. For $50 million yes, I will do it. That’s why I am an actress, everything you want me to do I’ll do as long as you pay. For $50 million I can act nude. I respect my culture but people pretend a lot in Africa.”

Former Nigerian female footballer, Iyabo Abade now living as a man

Former Super Falcons striker Iyabo Abade lived for many years as a hermaphrodite - a person with male and female organ. She/he had surgery in the US in 2004 and is now living as a man named James Johnson. Punch caught up with him recently and he opened up about his life

Now that you are a man, has it been easy playing men’s football?

I thank God for how far He has brought me. I have made every effort to get to the top as a footballer but there is no support from anywhere, even the Nigeria Football Federation. I am just trying on my own to get to the top but it hasn’t been easy. You go for trials and you do well and you are recruited but after sometime, they will start acting funny; they use my past against me. I try to ensure that I don’t let clubs know who I am.  I don’t like telling them that I am the former Iyabo Abade; I have to go there like every other normal player and fight for a place in the team. But when they hear that former Iyabo Abade has signed for either Crown FC or Plateau United, they start discriminating against me. 

Meanwhile I got there as James Johnson but they keep asking, “Can she cope in the midst of guys?” They have forgotten that I am a man and I met their requirements before they signed me up. Once they now know my past, they won’t allow me to play anymore. Were they blind when they signed me? With that, I feel frustrated and discriminated against so I decided that there was no need disturbing myself and I decided to quit. I am praying that God helps me so that I can continue my career abroad. I think things will be better over there.

Has the society accepted you for who you are?

Some do but some have not. Everybody cannot like you for who you are, so you just have to take life the way it is. My colleagues who we played together in the women’s league all welcome me. Some people want to be my friends even when they don’t know who I am and even when they know that I am the former Iyabo Abade turned James Johnson, they are still happy to be my friends. I am happy with that. There is no need for me to be feeling sad that God created me the way I am. So, I am happy with life but I feel sad because some people are out there to cut short your happiness. I will be happy playing football but some people don’t like it.

What is your relationship with your Falcons teammates?

Some of them still welcome me; they see me just like every other person. They don’t discriminate against me; we grew up together and did things together even though I am no more in their group. I am so happy about that. When the news first came out, a lot of them were shocked because they didn’t even know anything about hermaphrodite. But later, they sympathised with me; they said I am not God and didn’t create myself. That was how it went and we are still friends till now.

Your rehabilitation should be in stages. How far have you gone?

I am still on it. After I went for check-up in 2009, I am due for the next stage, where a surgery will be carried out to enable me become a full man and live a normal and perfect life. But every effort has been futile; nothing is really happening and I am looking up to God to intervene in this issue. I have made every effort and gone to the NSC but they did nothing. I took a letter there and was going there for about seven months. So I have to look elsewhere to enable me complete the surgery. I also wrote to NFF when Sani Lulu was the head and he gave me hope. He said, ‘Bring your letter and we will see what we can do.’ But at the end, they said, ‘We don’t know what happened to your letter.’ When it gets to releasing money, that is when the letter gets missing. Only Family Worship helped me a great deal to go for the check-up.

How much do you need for the surgery?

I will need about N12m for the final surgery. My doctor says I have to stay in the US for one year, so that he can monitor the final process. Aside the surgery, I will have to pay for accommodation for one year and other things like feeding and transportation.

Now that you haven’t finished the rehabilitation, would you say you are living a man’s life?

I would say I am living happily but my joy will be to complete the whole stages of the rehabilitation. Then I can boast of myself as a real man just like other guys. I will say I still need the final surgery before I can answer your question further.

You once had the ambition of becoming the first person ever to play for the female and male national teams of a country but the dream seems dashed. How do you feel?

I feel rejected and frustrated because football is my life but the NSC and the NFF are not in support of my ambition. If we had a good sports commission, I won’t be in this situation. Do they want me to cry to the US government? That will be a disgrace to Nigeria.

Who are those that stood behind you during your trying times?

I want to thank former FCT ministers Abba Gana and Nasir el-Rufai; they were very helpful. I wrote to the former First Lady, Turai Yar’Adua, and Patience Jonathan, who was then Second Lady. Though I didn’t get money from the First Lady but I was given the opportunity to enter Aso Rock. Unfortunately, her husband fell sick and she couldn’t attend to me. She asked some people to attend to me but I didn’t hear from them. The present First Lady has not done anything to help me despite all the efforts I have made to reach her, a fellow Niger Deltan like her. If northerners can show concern for me, why not her? Family Worship also gave me money for my check-up as well as the Redeemed Christian Church of God. I appreciate all of them.

Would you accept if the US says you should naturalise and play for them?

I will accept it with both hands. It’s everybody’s dream to be a US citizen, so I will jump at the opportunity.

What is your advice to other hermaphrodites, who are ashamed to come out or don’t have the opportunity you have?

I have some already and I have given my doctor in the US their contacts. They are two and they are into female football. They say a problem shared is half solved. If people don’t know your problem, you will die with it, so they just have to come out and let the world know what they are passing through. They need to look unto God. If not for God, I would have been a forgotten issue because at times, I feel like committing suicide. You will want to run into a moving truck but I thank God for being in charge of my life. I am happy today and everybody wants to mingle with me. So, life goes on.

Are you thinking of setting up a foundation for hermaphrodites?

Yes, so that many people with such issues can be treated. I hope to make it a worldwide foundation. There are a lot of hermaphrodites but they are shy or afraid to come out. There was a case that happened in Delta State when they almost killed a hermaphrodite. They said she is a witch. But it is not proper because these people didn’t create themselves. They should use me as a sign of hope. They can also be treated and be happy just like myself. I won’t blame them for not coming out because the support is not there in Nigeria. If they come out, they will be discriminated against.

When ladies you approach realise later that you were once like them, do they run away?

I am loved by women, there’s no doubt about that. They want to be my best friend. Everywhere I go, women always appreciate me because of my looks even when they later get to know about my issue. They always want to grab the opportunity to date someone like me. Some of them are happy to be with me because they have never seen such a person before. Every woman is mixing with James Johnson.

How was your trip to the US in 2012 with the Marasata Soccer Academy?

Marasata Soccer Academy brought me back to life because I felt so frustrated when I was neglected. The academy brought me in to lead the female team because I once played female football. That was how I became head of the coaching crew and with time, I will get to the top. The trip to the US last year was a success.

Aside not having a club side, do you still play football?

Of course yes. Football is part of me and I play every now and then, even with my boys in the academy. I derive joy in football; I play with Karo All Stars in Abuja and we play so many competitions.

If you look back now, is there a time you will recount with joy while playing female football?

Sometimes I feel sad that I didn’t continue what I know how to do best in the midst of the girls but I ignore it and let go. It’s not over, I still feel I will play for this country one day as a man but whether I play or not, I am happy with life. I was excluded from the 1999 Women’s World Cup but when the team returned home, my club FCT Queens had a match against Pelican Stars, which paraded all the superstars like Ann Agumanu, Mercy Akide, Eberechi Opara and Stella Mbachu. I was the only star in my team. It’s a game people still talk about. We were 2-1 down and I scored an incredible goal from the flank. That goal helped us beat Pelican 3-2 and they were complaining that why did they allow me to play the game after it was discovered that I am a hermaphrodite. People still say it was the best game they saw me play. My goal gingered my teammates to beat them. I will never forget that game. FCT Queens also won the Challenge Cup and I was one of the team’s trainers. That was how I got help to go for surgery. We were hosted in Sheraton and the then FCT Minister Nasir el-Rufai sponsored me to the US for the surgery.

Initially, was it easy blending from a female to male?

It was not easy in the beginning playing with the men but I took up the challenge. I didn’t get support as a male footballer. If I had remained as a female footballer, I knew where I would be now. In men’s football, it’s all about who you know. If you don’t have someone to back you up, forget it, no matter what you play. I felt there was no need going to a club and telling them that I was Iyabo Abade. I wanted to be there on merit but after signing, I faced discrimination.  I played for NEPA and Plateau United. At Plateau, they brought me in always as a late substitute because they didn’t believe I could play. But we were five they selected out of over 100 players that came for trials. If I was not good, why did they pick me from such a large number of players?

Do you sometimes feel like being a woman?

I chose to become a man because it is what God wants me to be. I didn’t use money as my priority in opting to be a man. If it was for money reasons, I would have remained as a woman because I was getting to the top of female football in Nigeria. I am happy with the decision I took. If I became a female, I probably wouldn’t have been happy with my life. So I just decided to move on. I am not regretting the step I made. I can tell you, women are running after me like Usain Bolt and I think it is better for me. I like it that way. I never expected it that way. Today, I am pleased that people want to know me.

We know you have been very close to Agatha Agu for a very long time. Are you planning to get married to her?

She is a very good person and if God says she is going to be my wife, I will be the happiest man because she deserves it; she has always been there for me right from our days in female football. She has been my backbone even when things are not working well. I know by His grace, we will get there.

Can you tell us your best moment?

I don’t have any yet until I wear the colours of the national team. If I cannot play for the main Eagles, at least I can for the home-based Eagles. I will appreciate if I get the opportunity.

If the home-based Eagles camp is thrown open ahead of the 2014 CHAN, do you think you can make it?

With God, I will make it. I am so sure of myself.

What is your word for coach Stephen Keshi?

I wish him the best. He has won the AFCON trophy, so we should appreciate him even if he is making some mistakes. We shouldn’t be criticising him always. He is a good coach and he needs our support.

So why did you do this? Do you do this for money?
Pendo: (Laughs) No, I didn’t get money from him. I didn’t WANT money from him. I did it simply cuz I find him hot and he is pretty legit in the music industry in Africa. Yeah, I am attracted by his talent, his fame, his power, but honestly, who isn’t? And people are talking so much because a lot of women wanted to be in my shoes, but were not. I’m not afraid to go after what I want. That’s just me. And I am unapologetic for it. I am content that I got what I wanted -which was to know him- and I guess it just naturally progressed from there…

So was this a one time thing then?
Pendo: No, I would do it again. Gladly. I don’t regret it at all.

Pendo: (Giggles) Ha, you won’t let this go will you. Haha, no seriously though, he has CRAZY moves, he kept it fresh for a couple hours. I am impressed. Definitely the best…(hesitates) Ok maybe not the best I ever had, but he is up there.

So was this a one night stand or will you be seeing him again?
Pendo: Davido is not only a good lover but a gentleman. Not only did he not publicise the affair, but he left me with some personal mementos to remember him. I don’t think a one night stand does that. Plus there is still communication going on. I’m not saying we are dating, but we are definitely still talking. He did not “hit it and quit it”.
