Nelly's Back And More Tech Savvy Than Ever

Rap legend Nelly is back with a new album this year, titled M.O. and slated to drop in June – and he’s packing more tech than ever. I got the dish in New York this month.
Meeting up at a Mike and Ike event, we discussed the technology that Nelly can’t live without – he’s a Mac, for starters and while he doesn’t use location-based apps much, “his people” use Foursquare and Yelp while they’re on the road to satisfy Nelly’s big appetite for turkey lasagna and the likes.
So, why Mike and Ike? Nelly is also making waves in the confectionetrairy world, reppin’ gummy candies Mike and Ike, which he’s been eating since he was a kid and started promoting after the candy manufacturer got wind that he is crazy about the lil’ sweets. After opening his new studio, the neighboring convenient store had to start tripling its weekly Mike and Ike order, as Nelly and his crew are always chomping on the gummies when they’re in session and wiping out the store’s stock.
Videographer Robert Wagnerman and I caught up with Nelly at a May event celebrating the “reunion” of Mike and Ike after their “split” last year. Nelly is credited with getting the two buddies back together, and it all went down in movie format. Well, in movie trailer format at least. Mike and Ike reps say a full-length movie isn’t necessarily in the plans, but it’s something they’re considering given the positive feedback the trailer has generated.
So, what kind of tech does Nelly gear up and get down with? For starters, he carries a Blackberry and an iPhone, like a true baller. And if that isn’t baller enough, he’s coming out with his own tablet. Screw the iPad, Galaxy and Surface – fitness company Celebrity Sweat, of which he is the poster celebrity, is releasing a dedicated tablet this summer, so that clients can exercise on the go. An iPad app would have just been too blase, I suppose.
Our chat was also an opportunity for me to meet an inspiring artist whose music I happened to shake my tail feathers to during half-time at high school football games in the Dirty South, where I was also raised. Beyond tech, we also discussed Nelly’s true passion: His children. Ladies, make note that along with being a doting father, he’s also single man.
And if you were wondering how many inches his MacBook is, “the biggest one,” he confirmed. Just as I suspected.
Check out the video interview above for more on the technology that powers Nelly’s life.
Major kudos to videographer Robert Wagnerman of HAYM Pictures who made the interview look extra bomb.
